{"id":283,"date":"2017-06-10T00:10:06","date_gmt":"2017-06-10T04:10:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.secondordereffects.com\/?p=283"},"modified":"2017-06-18T07:21:13","modified_gmt":"2017-06-18T11:21:13","slug":"increased-co2-will-cause-asthma-attacks-in-kids-really","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.secondordereffects.com\/index.php\/2017\/06\/10\/increased-co2-will-cause-asthma-attacks-in-kids-really\/","title":{"rendered":"Increased CO2 will cause Asthma Attacks in kids, really?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"entry\">\n<h2><strong>Articles Principal Focus<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Right after President Trump announced that he was pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Change Accord; former Secretary of State John Kerry made a number of claims that the world was going to come to an end because he pulled the U.S. out (see the video below).\u00a0 One of the more mundane claims was that more children are going to have asthma.\u00a0\u00a0 My reaction was, how in the world is more CO<sub>2<\/sub> going to affect asthma in children? \u00a0The level of CO<sub>2<\/sub> in a person\u2019s lungs is, as they get ready to exhale, many times the level in the atmosphere (This is why you exhale). \u00a0So this article focuses on how a relatively small change in the atmospheric CO<sub>2<\/sub> levels could cause asthma in children.<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-algn:left\"><span style=\"display:inline-block;text-align:center;\"><iframe allow=\"autoplay\" class=\"youtube_embed_iframe\"    allowFullScreen=\"true\" style=\"width:640px; height:360px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M7Obb4Ri9R0?autoplay=0&theme=dark&loop=0&fs=1&showinfo=1&modestbranding=0&iv_load_policy=3&color=red&autohide=1&disablekb=0&enablejsapi=1&version=3\"><\/iframe><\/span><\/div>\n<h2><strong>The Discussion<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Secretary Kerry&#8217;s comments made no sense from a scientific point of view. \u00a0Our lungs are the result of millions of year\u2019s evolution and are well suited to exchange Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide efficiently and one would think without issue.\u00a0 So, how could a tiny change in CO<sub>2<\/sub> levels in the atmosphere cause asthma in children?\u00a0 The answer is, it can&#8217;t. \u00a0John Kerry isn&#8217;t a stupid man, so what went into this statement?<\/p>\n<p>It appears that former Secretary of State Kerry was using conflation to confuse CO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions with truly harmful pollution that on the face of it, could be causing the asthma attacks.\u00a0 On January 10, 2017 former Secretary of State Kerry spoke on the Foreign Policy challenges facing the incoming Trump Administration.\u00a0 During the presentation, the topic of asthma and environmental concerns was raised and here is what he said:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\"><sup>&#8220;All most unanimously scientist agree that humans are causing climate change.\u00a0 We spend 55 billion dollars every year to cope with acute asthma which comes from air-quality from coal fired and fossil fuel fired power plants. From a health point of view, from a national security point of view, from an environmental point of view, from every bit of science that&#8217;s coming at us, we need to deal with climate change again, i don&#8217;t think that in the end people are going to move away from that because it&#8217;s real and the rest of the world is moving towards it.&#8221;<\/sup><\/span><\/p>\n<p>So, what is really happening is that former Secretary of State Kerry is conflating Carbon Dioxide, as a greenhouse gas, with all other forms of pollution that cause air quality issues. \u00a0So, he knows that CO<sub>2<\/sub> levels don&#8217;t cause asthma but by conflating these issues he can confuse many in the audience and give them one more reason to reduce their carbon foot print.<\/p>\n<p>There is one point that hasn&#8217;t been made so far, other forms of pollution have largely been stopped in the US and in the west in general; the atmosphere has been getting cleaner over the last several decades but these acute asthma attacks have been going up.\u00a0 This shows a negative collaboration with pollution?\u00a0 Let\u2019s look at some science and see if there is some other potential cause for the asthma attacks.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Science<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>First, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedaily.com\/releases\/2014\/11\/141104111631.htm\">more carbon dioxide in the lungs helps reduce symptoms and healthier lung function<\/a> according to a study by the Southern Methodist University.\u00a0 The study says:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Asthma patients taught to habitually resist the urge to take deep breaths when experiencing symptoms were rewarded with fewer symptoms and healthier lung function, according to a new study from Southern Methodist University, Dallas.<\/p>\n<p>So, this is settled science, more CO<sub>2<\/sub> in your lungs is good for you (sarcasm).<\/p>\n<p>But back to the point, why is it that asthma attacks are increasing in frequency?\u00a0 Anyone that paid attention in High School Biology knows that all animals breath-in Oxygen rich air and exhale air rich in CO<sub>2<\/sub>.\u00a0 The CO<sub>2<\/sub> is removed from the atmosphere and replaced with O<sub>2<\/sub> by plants through photosynthesis.\u00a0 So plants like CO<sub>2<\/sub>, it is actually plant food.\u00a0 As the CO<sub>2<\/sub> levels have risen, it appears that the pollen levels have also risen.<\/p>\n<p>So, is it possible that the plants are reacting to the CO<sub>2<\/sub> and the longer growing periods by producing more pollen?\u00a0 In an Apr 29, 2004 article in WebMD:<em> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.webmd.com\/asthma\/news\/20040429\/high-carbon-dioxide-levels-may-up-asthma-rate#1\">High Carbon Dioxide Levels May Up Asthma Rate<\/a><\/em> the author, based on a Harvard Medical School report, that pollen levels are rising and that this is responsible for the increasing asthma rates.\u00a0 Reports have continued to identify pollen from over sexed plants as a likely culprit in the rise of asthma.\u00a0 As late as 2013, Think-Progress presented an article &#8211; <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thinkprogress.org\/as-co2-emissions-rise-so-will-pollen-counts-and-asthma-attacks-437f07e4d72a\">As CO<sub>2<\/sub> Emissions Rise, So Will Pollen Counts and Asthma Attacks<\/a> &#8211;<\/em> that states that Rag Weed seems to just love the new normal, more CO<sub>2<\/sub> and a longer growing period and is producing record pollen counts.\u00a0 Many other plants seem to be reacting the same way.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Summary<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While one can\u2019t say for sure why Secretary Kerry seems to have ignored the science but we can make some guesses:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>He just didn\u2019t know about these studies \u2013 It took me all of 10 minutes with google to find them, but he might not have time to look.<\/li>\n<li>He thought he knew, so he didn\u2019t look; or<\/li>\n<li>This answer didn\u2019t fit his world view so he dismissed them out of confirmation bias; he wanted the coal industry to be the culprit so he could push for more regulation of an industry that he despises.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Whatever the reason Secretary Kerry seems to be looking in the wrong place for a villain.<\/p>\n<p>The final point is this, we need plants to survive.\u00a0 If we get more growth from plants because of longer growing seasons and more CO<sub>2<\/sub>, then that is a good thing.\u00a0 Every year we have to feed more people, having a better environment for our plants will help provide for this new population in the future. \u00a0So there are good things that come from Climate Change and we should understand those as well as the potentially bad things so we can make decisions based on all of the evidence.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Right after President Trump announced that he was pulling the U.S. out of the Paris Climate Change Accord;
